With a whole new look, the Phoenix Coyotes are looking to finally get over the hump and make a deep playoff run. A new goaltender will be leading the defense this season after 3 year starter Ilya Bryzgalov left for the east coast. The Coyotes turned their focus towards improving their defense this off season and with the addition of new players, the Coyotes defense looks to be among Pacific’s best.
The Coyotes blueliners have the perfect combination of veteran leadership and new young talent to improve their overall defense. 38 year old, Adrian Aucion is entering his 17th season and will be a mentor to many of the young and new defenseman that have arrived in Phoenix.I found some more information here. The Coyotes have a lot of trust in their 24 year old Keith Yandle who just signed a multi-year deal with the team. He looks to be the franchise defenseman for years to come and will make big plays for the Coyotes. The good thing about the defense is that even with Aucoin, they are very young as a hole. Yandle, Chris Summers, David Schlemko and Oliver Ekman-Larsson are all under 25 years of age and all show major promise. Throw in a handful of other middle aged defenseman that have a good combination of experience and skill.
Look for the youth of the system to show promise in the 2011-2012 season. Yandle lead the team in assists last year and with his new contract, he looks to have a career season.
